Over the years, the entertainment industry has become an important part of our lives. There is a wide spectrum of media including music, movies, and podcasts, videos, and gossip channels that keep us engaged throughout the day. Over the past few years, the content-delivery and consumption patterns have changed dramatically to fit the needs of different times. Everyone involved in this field needs to change with time and that shift doesn't just affect studios, but musicians, movie stars, directors, writers and marketing personnel as well.
With the rise of streaming services, major studios are realizing that they need to take action to curb the rise of new, cutting-edge services. Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures, Disney, and 20th Century Fox are all competing fiercely to grab the audience?s attention. Not only do they have a massive offline presence, but they are trying to establish themselves online as well. You?ll find these major studios using different platforms such as Twitter and Reddit. Almost all of them use YouTube under a pseudonym.
Today, we are going to be reviewing one of the most popular communities on Reddit called r/Entertainment. You will find the funniest, weirdest, fascinating, and alarming stories about anyone and everyone from the entertainment industry.
My recent experience on r/Entertainment
The last time I browsed r/Entertainment, there were two stories that I upvoted. The first story was originally published on deadline.com, and the second was published on popculture.com.
The audience interaction on both these posts was significantly different. The âRiz Ahmedâ story received 9.5k upvotes with 300 comments whereas the âOprahâ bit received just 28 upvotes. This shows that popularity and interaction can be deceiving on this platform.
About r/Entertainment - Community & Members
The r/Entertainment community is a source of news and discussion from the entertainment industry. There are 1.5 million members, of which 2-5k members are online at any given time. r/Entertainment was one of the earliest subreddits on the platform, starting its journey back on September 17, 2007.
If you love entertainment, gossip, and news surrounding the media industry, you would find quality content on this subreddit on a daily basis. At the time of writing this review, I learned about the news of Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan passing away on this page. Other than hard news and headlines, you would also find light humor and engaging content which will keep you hooked to this subreddit.
How to access r/Entertainment?
To be able to use Reddit, you must first create an account and confirm your email address. Once you do so, you can follow subreddits, comment on posts, and even post anything on any of the subreddits.
Moderators of r/Entertainment
R/Entertainment is the top source for entertainment journalists and audiences who love news, columns, and featured stories about films, celebrities, rumor mills, and more. Since the community has over a million members, it's fair that it has more than 1-2 moderators to run the proceedings. These moderators ensure that the content complies with group norms and people are entertained without any hassle.
There are four right moderators on r/Entertainment: Jedberg, BritishEnglishPolice, greatyellowshark, davidreiss666, and GuacamoleFanatic.
Why should you follow r/Entertainment?
Reddit is a popular website where hundreds of posts are updated each day about entertainment news, spoilers, previews, trailers, and even feature articles. The most popular post on any given day receives anywhere between 2,000-5,000 upvotes within 24 hours. This number is quite respectable given the size of the community and the fact that Reddit isn't as big as other websites like r/videos or r/youtube. Additionally, you'd see the bandwagon effect where if there's hard news happening in the entertainment industry, you'll find 10-12 stories surrounding it shared by Redditors from all around the world.
Community Engagement
This subreddit is an active community, and you'll always find people to talk to on it. People are updating posts, communicating via comments, and even sharing a quality post on their social media profiles. One thing that I noticed about this page is that the post seems to get upvotes and attention 2-3 days after the initial upload. So, if you create a post today, it might only attract 400-800 upvotes but after a few days, it starts to gain traction and easily surpasses the 10,000-mark.
Browsing and Navigation
I don't really care about celebrity news and gossip, but I still spend 5-10 minutes on Reddit's Entertainment every day. Browsing across various categories is smooth, and finding content is not much of a hassle. Nonetheless, I still think the mods could do a better job by adding filters by user flairs to facilitate smooth navigation. Right now the only way to find relatable content is by using the basic sorting function. And that doesn't seem very efficient.
Reddit Gold
Some stories on this particular page will grab attention while others will not. However, the popularity of the post in relation to gold distribution can be deceiving. For instance, Tom Hanks' blood being used for Coronavirus vaccine research gathered more than 40,000 upvotes and 1 gold. At the same time, 'The Midnight Gospel?' is mind-expanding - Once You Get Past The First Few Episodes? with just 4,200 upvotes managed to win gold.
Filter by flair
Many subreddits have a section called ?Filter by Flair?. However, the most disappointing aspect of r/Entertainment is that there is no filter by flair. That means that you cannot sort content based on your preference. You'll need to rely on basic ?Top?, ?Rising? content sorting features, as there's no genre-based sorting available.
Important rules you must know before joining r/Entertainment?

Design
However, it would be better if you could also choose topics to put on the front page that are more popular.
It seems like not enough attention has been paid to this subreddit's design. The blue cover at the top is standard, and there is a ?Join? button near the right side. The ?Create Post? section is underneath that, and it features a few standard features such as content types and post sorting. However, it would be better if popular topics could be chosen for the front page instead.
Right under the information about the community, you will find a banner ad. In total, you will find 2-3 banner ads in the sidebar and in-feed which will not affect your browsing experience.
