When it comes to movie and TV streaming platforms, few are as massively popular (or as critically acclaimed) as Hulu. In fact, the only streaming site that rivals it is Netflix, which was founded in 1997. Hulu, however, in its 12 years of providing quality content (both original and syndicated) has given Netflix quite a run for their money. I know many people personally who have actually switched over from Netflix to Hulu in the last 5 or so years. Plus, with Hulu's recent merger with Disney, it looks like the growth and potential for this streaming platform is becoming unstoppable.
Here is an interesting fact about Hulu that you may not know: it is derived from two Mandarin words. The first word, húlú, refers to a calabash or a bottle gourd. The second word, hùlù, means something like "an interactive recording."
The company's own blog sheds some light on this concept. According to the blog, "Hulu has two interesting meanings, each highly relevant to our mission. The primary meaning interested us because it is used in an ancient Chinese proverb that describes the Hulu as the holder of precious things. It literally translates to ?gourd,? and in ancient times, the Hulu was hollowed out and used to hold precious things." The secondary meaning is "interactive recording." We saw both definitions as appropriate bookends and highly relevant to the mission of Hulu.

History

. Some of the early staples of Hulu who are now executives played an important role in the company's early development: Bruce Campbell, Peter Chernin, JB Perrette, Michael Lang, Beth Comstock, and Jason Kilar. These individuals were most frequently credited with founding Hulu back when it was announced in 2006. Once the project was announced, it was also made public that tech giants like AOL, NBC Universal (now Comcast), Yahoo, Facebook, MSN, and Myspace were to be the initial development partners. Jason Kilar served as CEO of Hulu toward the end of 2007.
In 2007, the website that would become Hulu was first conceived and had no content on it. In October 2007, the first beta test of the site began inviting users to email themselves if they wanted to be a part of it. It wasn't until March 2008 that Hulu formally launched in the United States.
It didn't take very long for Hulu to become one of the biggest streaming services in the world. By 2011, it was reported that an unnamed bidder offered Hulu over $2 billion to acquire the site. However, Hulu decided not to sell itself and continued to lay down groundwork and release new services for us over the last decade.
