Movies are an integral part of the entertainment industry that has been long-standing. Their impact on people around the world is massive, with some using them as an escape from their monotonous lives, while others find cinema a passion and enjoy watching movies for its educational and entertaining value. Over time, the content has evolved to meet the needs of viewers, and it will continue to do so in the future. Movies have the power to transport viewers into a different dimension, both educationally and emotionally.
In recent years, the improvement in technology has led to a change in the way we watch movies. Instead of 3D movies being the buzz, IMAX and 4DX have taken over in the past couple of years. And in time, even they will be replaced by something better. All in all, movies play a vital role in our lives and having a community where movie lovers can express their opinions is important to many people. It makes us feel included and allows us to accept different art forms and cultures. Not just that, but movies also teach us lessons about life and perception which is why many people love being part of a larger community
Movie clubs are widely accepted and rejected by the mass consensus. Much of it can be accredited to the bandwagon effect, which in my opinion, is unjust. But your perception can differ from mine, and that's the beauty of being a part of this broader community. Today, I'm going to review one of the lesser-known movie-related communities known as r/Movie_Club.
My recent experience on r/Movie_Club
My most recent experience on r/Movie_Club was two days ago, when I browsed through the weekly posts and stumbled across this poll. Though it just had three upvotes, the original post on r/polls attracted 254 votes. What was it about? It was a question asking the users, "On average, when you go to watch a movie, how many people do you go with?"
Out of 254 votes, 103 people voted with one other person, 71 people voted with two other people, 29 voted with three other people, 28 voted by themselves, 12 voted 5+ people, and 11 voted four other people. This data can be generalized a little bit because on an average, most moviegoers enjoy watching movies with a partner instead of going alone or with family. This was one of the most insightful posts on this subreddit.
About r/Movie_Club - Community & Members
The community of 23,400 members has 12-30 members online at any given time. This subreddit was created on July 20, 2015 and has been growing at a steady rate. Nonetheless, engagement is quite low because not many people are active on this sub. Few dozen members are actively involved in real-time.
How to access r/Movie_Club?
If you're not a Reddit user, you'll need to create an account and confirm your email address before joining. After you do so, you can follow subreddits, comment on posts, and even post anything on any of the subreddits.
Moderators of r/Movie_Club
One of the most fascinating aspects of r/Movie_Club is its moderators. Though the community is small, it does have ten mods to keep everything in check. They ensure that the page is up to date, and that users are posting content adhering to community guidelines. At the time of review, the ten mods are: Bondle?, Lukeeman?, wheeledjustice?, AutoModerator?, darkchiefly?, Movie_Club_Moderator?, PandaCow64?, Obiwan_Shinobi?, Alaharon123?, and brianjaction.
Why should you follow r/Movie_Club?
As members of this subreddit, we don't just review movies and participate in polls; we also request titles. Having a group filled with movie fanatics is a huge advantage because you can rely on the recommendation you get. For instance, there was this post where the OP requested "Proper scary movies to watch on Halloween, as well as a few classics." He later summarized the title and set his expectations straight. As a viewer, if you have something helpful, you would obviously recommend movies and titles. And that's how the communication begins.
Community Engagement
Despite the community being only 20,000+ strong, engagement rates are abysmal. There are dozens of posts that are updated by the users, but not one of them has received more than 10 upvotes. Only the mods' announcements receive more upvotes than this. If you look for content from the past week, other posts manage to attract over 10 upvotes only if they are announcements from the mods. This is pretty sad because hardly any members are actually active in real-time.
Browsing & Navigation
Active members of a community who are often browsing the site will find it much less tiring due to the fact that posts load instantly. This saves time and allows for a more enjoyable browsing experience.
Reddit Gold
I didn't expect anything in regards to Reddit Gold. With a community whose engagement is less than 0.5%, you can understand that the content on it is generally not gold worthy. Most of the informative subreddits have this problem. Here, people don't feel like awarding gold to a fellow member because they aren't getting any significant input or humor from the post. I browsed the page for 10 minutes and didn't find a single gold.
Filter by flair
Another downside of the sub is that it does not have an essential option for filtering posts by flair. As a user browsing through posts, you donât want a flood of unusual posts in your feed. Using filter by flair, you can find posts from your desired category. For example, if you want to participate in polls or ask for recommendations, thesub should have those options, so you can check them out. Unfortunately, r/Movie_Club just has one option, and thatâs âLocked.â
Important rules you must know before joining r/Movie_Club?
Before you join any sub, be sure to read the rules and regulations of the page. If you break the rules, you may get banned, and that would not be good. So, here are some rules for r/Movie_Club that you need to follow:

Allowed
We ask that you refrain from making any hate-based comments, spamming, or engaging in circlejerking. This is a community for serious discussion and debate, not for immature behavior.
Design
One of the most underwhelming elements on this sub is its design. The page is very generic with a Saturn logo and blue cover. With over 20,000 members, at least the community icon should be changed to ensure that the page stands apart. But that's not the case on this sub, which is quite disappointing.

Conclusion
The movie club is a cool platform with a distinct niche. However, it isn't very engaging, and as a member, don't expect to get upvotes or even comments on your posts. It's mostly a passive community that appears past its peak.
