History and description

Its original name was Stadio della Giovenco. The Renzo Barbera Stadium opened on January 24, 1932 with a 5-1 victory over Atalanta. It initially consisted of two stands on each side and had an athletics track circling the pitch. Its original name was the Stadio della Giovenco. The stadium was originally called Stadio Littorio, but soon changed its name to Stadio Michele Marrone, a fallen war hero of the Spanish Civil War. After the fall of the fascist regime, it changed its name again to La Favorita.

Stadio La Favorita underwent its first major redevelopment in 1948 when the athletics track got removed and both curves were built. This resulted in a capacity of about 30,000 spectators.

The stadium underwent a second major redevelopment in 1984 when a second tier was added, increasing capacity to just under 50,000. Perhaps too ambitious, as Palermo failed to make the jump to Serie A and therefore only sold out twice in the following years.

With the 1990 World Cup in mind, the second tier of stadiums was extended, though seating capacity dropped as stands were installed in place of standing areas. During the works, 5 workers lost their lives when part of a stand collapsed.

Stadio La Favorita hosted three group matches during the 1990 World Cup.

No major renovations have been performed in the decades since, although a few small upgrades have been made in order to comply with UEFA requirements.

In 2002, the stadium was renamed in honour of former club president Renzo Barbera.

Palermo has been considering building a new stadium for many years. At one point, they presented plans for a new 35,000-seat stadium named Stadio di Palermo, but these failed to come to fruition. The club is currently looking into redeveloping the Renzo Barbera.

How to get to Stadio Renzo Barbera

The Renzo Barbera stadium is located in the north of Palermo, about 3.5 kilometers from its historic city center, 3 kilometres from the port, and just over 5 kilometres from the central railway station. The beach area Mondello is about 6 kilometres further north. It's a long walk from the historic city center to the stadium, taking around 45 minutes. It's a pleasant walk following the wide and leafy Via della Liberta north.

If you're arriving by car from the Viale della Regione Siciliana, exiting at Via Belgio turn east into town and follow the signs to Stadio La Favorita. After a few hundred metres, turn right onto Via Empedocle Restivo and shortly after left onto Via Alcide de Gasperi. The stadium is in front of you.

If using public transport to get to Stadio Renzo Barbera, bus 101 can be reached with stops at either Stazione Centrale or Via Roma. Buses depart almost every five minutes, so it is important to arrive early to ensure a seat.

Bus 107 follows a less regular route than bus 108, but it connects the stadium with Mondello. Line 614 and 615 connect the stadium with Mondello.

Address: Viale del Fante 11, 90146 Palermo
