History and description

On 23 September 1956, Estádio do Restelo opened its doors to spectators with a match between Belenenses and Sporting. Two days later, Belenenses hosted Stade de Reims for the first match under floodlights. At that time, the stadium could hold about 44,000 people. It was later expanded to about 60,000 places and has been filled to capacity for a match against Benfica in 1975.

Recent renovations have primarily consisted of converting the stadium into an all-seater, which has resulted in a significant reduction in its capacity.

How to get to Estadio do Restelo

The Estádio do Restelo is centrally located in the Belem area and is only a few minutes walking from well-known sights such as the Torre de Belem and Mosteiro dos Jeronimos. The tram stop Belém can be reached with tram 15 (direction Algés), which can be taken from Praça Figueira or Praça Comércio in Lisbon's historic centre. Trams run regularly and it takes about 25 minutes to reach the stop.

Alternatively, you can take the train from Cais do Sodre station, which is also in the historic centre. Take a train to Cascais, though make sure it stops in Belem (not all do). The journey only takes 8 minutes.

Address: Estádio do Restelo, 1449-015 Lisboa
