History and description

The city of Bochum laid the groundwork for the stadium construction. In 1933, work on the first grandstand began and it was completed in 1934. The stadium hosted its first match on 18 October 1935 when Bochum faced Hertha Berlin. The Vonovia Ruhrstadion, previously called simply Ruhrstadion and rewirpowerStadion for sponsor reasons, is a stadium in Bochum, Germany that has been in use since 1911. The city of Bochum laid the groundwork for the stadium construction. In 1933, work on the first grandstand began and it was completed in 1934. The stadium hosted its first match on 18 October 1935 when Bochum faced Hertha Berlin. After World War I, the Ruhrstadion got significantly expanded. It was then able to hold about 50,000 spectators. It was one of the largest and most modern stadiums in Germany at that time.

A new main stand was built in the 1950s, but other changes were made only in the mid-1970s. At that time, several new and more modern stadiums had been built in Germany and the Ruhrstadion lacked the proper facilities for Bundesliga football.

Bochum underwent a major redevelopment program in the late 1970s, which led to the reconstruction of one by one all of its stadium stands. For a time, Bochum was forced to play its home matches at Dortmund's Westfalenstadion.

The Ruhrstadion reopened on July 21st, 1979 with a match against SG Wattenscheid 09. The stadium's capacity at the time was 49,522 people.

Since 2006, only minor renovations have been performed on the stadium, including the conversion of part of the standing areas into seating. In 2016, it changed its name to Vonovia Ruhrstadion following a new sponsorship deal.
