History and description

They returned to Roots Hall in 1987 after a successful campaign to find a new home. Southend United had been playing at Roots Hall since their foundation in 1906, but they moved away in 1919 and spent over three decades renting other grounds. They returned to Roots Hall in 1987 after a successful campaign to find a new home. The club settled on the site of Roots Hall in 1955 where they had previously played. The new ground opened on 20 August 1955 with a match between Southend and Norwich.

Roots Hall recorded its highest attendance of 31,033 people in 1979 when Liverpool visited for an FA Cup match.

The stadium underwent a series of changes in the 1990s when it converted to an all-seater and part of the south stand was sold off to real estate developers in order to keep the struggling club afloat. The small double-tiered stand replaced the stand.

Sadly, the Southend stadium project has been stalled for the last two decades due to bureaucratic and financial problems.
