History and description

The Estadio San Mamés, nicknamed La Catedral, officially opened on the 21st of August 1913 with a match between Athletic Club and the Spanish champions of that year, Racing Club de Irun. The first goal was scored by Rafael Moreno "Pichichi?". At first, San Mamés had a capacity of 7,000 seats. However, over time the stadium grew and now has a capacity of nearly 10,000.

In the 1950s, significant developments occurred with the construction of a new main stand. The most distinctive aspect of the new stand was an arch that ran over its entire length.

Construction of the new stadium began in 1978, shortly before Spain hosted the World Cup. The project was completed a few years later and it was used as one of the playing venues during the 1982 tournament. The stadium underwent a number of renovations in order to make it more comfortable and accessible for fans. Most notably, the stands were rebuilt and connected, increasing capacity to 46,000.

During the World Cup, San Mamés hosted three matches in the first group stage.

The stadium underwent a few minor refurbishments after that. These included the conversion of the stadium into an all-seater.

Athlétic decided to build a new stadium adjacent to San Mamés in 2013 after time left its mark on the old stadium. The new stadium, which also goes by the name of San Mamés, opened in September. The old stadium had been demolished a few months earlier.
