History and description

Over the years, the stadium has hosted a variety of events including international football matches and concerts. In 2014, it was announced that the stadium will be renovated in order to improve its facilities for spectators. It was also used for the final match between Italy and Brazil. The stadium originally could hold about 70,000 spectators, but this was later reduced to around 40,000 after it underwent renovations for the 1990 World Cup. During the World Cup, Stadio Sant'Elia hosted three group matches and was also used for the final match between Italy and Brazil.

In the following decades, the state of the stadium deteriorated rapidly, and in the early 2000s both curves and one of the long sides were closed and three temporary bleachers were placed on top of the athletics track. This almost half-cut capacity to 23,486 seats.

The new stadium will act as the home for both the team and the Sardinian football federation. As a result, Cagliari started exploring potential new stadiums to house both the club and Sardinian football federation. Initial plans were changed with the perspective of hosting an upcoming Euro 2016 tournament in Italy, but eventually a 23,000-seat stadium was chosen in the Elmas area near Cala d'Or airport. The new stadium will be used by both Cagliari and Sardinia's football federation.

The project, often referred to as the Karalis Arena, was halted though by protests of the local aviation authority, and the club, dissatisfied with the conditions at Stadio Sant?Elia and further capacity reductions, decided to build a makeshift stadium in the nearby municipality of Quartu Sant?Elena.

This stadium, known as Is Arenas, opened in September of 2012 but was plagued with safety issues and was closed down before the end of that season. Cagliari temporarily moved to Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste, but announced in the summer of 2013 that they were moving back to Stadio Sant'Elia later that year.

Cagliari unsuccessfully attempted to find a solution to build a new stadium and in 2015 plans were proposed to replace Stadio Sant?Elia with a new stadium. They finally received the go-ahead in 2017, and at the end of the 2016-17 season Stadio Sant?Elia was demolished and Cagliari moved to a temporary makeshift ground at the parking lot of the stadium.
