History and description

São Januário, also known as Gigante da Colina, opened on 21 April 1927 with a match between Vasco da Gama and Santos. At the time, it was the largest stadium in South America, and though it lost its status as the largest stadium in Brazil quickly, it remained the largest stadium in Brazil until the opening of Pacaembu in 1940. In the 1930s and 1940s, São Januário regularly hosted the Brazilian national team and it was one of the two playing venues at the 1949 Copa América. However, since 1990 Maracaña has had to settle with only two international friendlies in late 1990s and early 2000s.

The main stand is listed as a national heritage site. In 2007, a statue of Romario was erected right behind the goal in which he scored his 1000th goal ever.

The stadium has not changed over the years, though it recently underwent a refurbishment of its interior, VIP areas, and seating areas.

How to get to Sao Januario

São Januário is located in the north of Rio de Janeiro, close to the central rail station and bus station. Various bus services can take you to the stadium. It is easiest to take a taxi, but otherwise there are various ways to get there.

Bus 473 gets you to the stadium. Get on the bus at the Tonelera Rua. The stadium is at the end of the line.

Bus 472 also passes right in front of the stadium. You can board this bus at downtown (Av Pres Vargas), Flamengo (Praia do Flamengo), or at the northern edge of Copacabana beach.

There is a bus that goes from Ipanema to Copacabana, Flamengo, and downtown. It stops close to the stadium.

Address: Rua General Almério de Moura 131, Bairro Vasco da Gama, Rio de Janeiro

Vasco da Gama Tickets

Tickets for Vasco da Gama matches can be purchased online, at the ticket office at São Januário, or at any of the other sales points, including the club office in Lagoa and one of multiple club shops, including the one at Rua Figueiredo de Magalhães 286 in Copacabana. Tickets tend to go on sale from a few days before the match.

Tickets can be bought at the ticket windows of the stadium before the start of the match, though it is possible that the local derbies will sell out.

Ticket prices will range between R$30.00 and R$100.00 for most opponents, but can be increased to between R$50.00 and R$150.00 for high-profile opponents.

Useful Internet links

This is the official website of CR Vasco da Gama. This website has information about the club and it's official competitions. This website also contains information about Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian city where CR Vasco da Gama play their football. Finally, this website provides a public transport journey planner to help visitors plan their trip to Rio de Janeiro. Photo credits: Diego Baravelli

I took a taxi from Maracana for 20 reals and the same way I came back. Taxis are so cheap there is no point going by bus especially if you do not know the area. Tickets are sold outside the stadium by fans as well as in the ticket offices.

I went to the stadium today to watch Vasco play Sao Paulo. It's an amazing stadium and the fans are fantastic. The atmosphere was the best I experienced while traveling in Brazil. I took a taxi from the Maracana for 20 reals and it cost the same way to come back. Taxis are really cheap there, so there's no point going by bus unless you know the area well. Tickets can be bought outside of the stadium by fans as well as in ticket offices.

Going to the World Cup games in Brazil is definitely a worthwhile experience, although the transportation can be a bit inconvenient. The area around the stadium is also populated by a favela, but that doesn't bother most travellers.

Overall, I would say that the experience of watching a football match at the Maracana Stadium is definitely worthwhile for football fans visiting Rio de Janeiro. However, the transportation to and from the site can be a bit of a pain, as it's located within one of Rio's more dangerous favelas.
