History and description

The stadium cost $60 million Canadian and had a seating capacity of 18,000. Stade Saputo was built in 2007 to serve as the new home of the Montreal Impact, who were then playing in the NASL. The Impact held their first home match on 29 May 2010 against Toronto FC. The stadium has since been expanded to around 30,000 and is currently the largest soccer-specific stadium in North America. Stade Saputo officially opened on 19th of May 2008 with a match between the Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps. It could initially hold just over 13,000 spectators, but when the Impact got selected as an MLS expansion team in 2010, a stadium expansion was part of the deal. Construction on the new stadium began in 2011 and has since included the addition of 7,000 seats, upgraded corporate facilities, and a roof that covers about 30% of the seats.

As the Impact had not completed any work on their stadium before the start of the inaugural MLS season, they played their first matches at the adjacent Olympic Stadium. They played their first match at the renovated Stade Saputo on 16 June 2012 against Seattle Sounders (4-1).

How to get to Stade Saputo

Stade Saputo is located in the north of Montreal, about 6 kilometers from downtown and about 7.5 kilometers from Montreal Central Station. It is part of the Montreal Olympic Park that also includes the Olympic Stadium.

The stadium is located close to metro station Viau and metro station Pie IX. Both stations are located on metro line 1, which passes right through downtown Montreal. The ride to the stadium takes just over 10 minutes.
