History & description

The stadium was renamed Soldier Field in 1924 in honor of all the military veterans who had fought in World War I and World War II. The stadium has routinely drawn over 100,000 spectators each and every time it has been used. This occurred most recently in 2017 when 123,000 people gathered to witness a football match between Notre Dame and Southern California.

In the 1970s, the Bears moved out of their stadium that had a capacity of 66,950 seats. Over the next decade, they made several renovations that reduced the capacity to 54,000 seats.

Soldier Field was one of the venues where the 1994 World Cup was played. It hosted four first round group matches and the round of 16 match between Germany and Belgium.

The stadium was rebuilt in 2003 except for the classic facades which reduced capacity to its current of just over 60,000.

The stadium had become the home of Chicago Fire in 1998 when they joined MLS. It soon proved too large for their attendances, so the club decided to build a new soccer-specific stadium. They moved to Toyota Park in Bridgeview in 2005.

However, they never really warmed up to the stadium far out of town and 15 years later decided to move back to Soldier Field, starting with the 2020 season.

Since the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournaments have been held in the USA over the years, the stadium has served as a regular playing venue. It has hosted the 2007, 2013 and 2019 tournament final.

Soldier Field will be one of the playing venues for the 2026 World Cup, which is to be hosted in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

How to get to Soldier Field

The Soldier Field Stadium was built in 1910 and originally served as the home field of the Chicago Bears. It has been renovated multiple times since then, most recently in 2002. The Soldier Field Stadium is currently used by the Chicago Red Sox. Soldier Field is located in central Chicago and lies on the southern edge of Chicago's central business district, The Loop. It is easily reached and has been renovated multiple times since 1910, most recently in 2002. The Soldier Field Stadium currently serves as the home field of the Chicago Red Sox. The nearest metro station is Roosevelt station, which is on the Red, Green, and Orange lines with links to many central locations. It can be a 15-minute walk to the stadium.

If you are from the south side of Chicago, you might be able to catch a Metra Electric train to 18th Street Station.

Chicago Fire Tickets

Chicago Fire tickets can be bought online through Ticketmaster. Depending on the opponent, tickets can cost anywhere from $20.00 for a general admission ticket in the stands behind the goal to $75.00 for a club seat at the side of the field.
