History and description

The stadium has a capacity of 25,000 and is located in the city of Metz. The stadium has been gradually expanding since the 1950s and 60s, which included the construction of a new main stand in 1962. In 1991, its record attendance was 28,766 spectators who attended a match between Metz and Marseille.

The late 1990s saw the Saint-Symphorien Stadium aging, and so the club undertook a modernization program in which they constructed the characteristic three-tiered West Stand in 1999 and a new East Stand in 2001.

Following the selection of Saint-Symphorien as the site for the 2016 European Championships, plans were presented to extensively renovate the stadium in order for it to be eligible as a playing venue. However, plans fell apart due to a lack of funding and the city was forced to withdraw from hosting consideration.

In 2018, plans surfaced for a more modest renovation of the stadium that would include the construction of two new stands. The first part, the construction of a new main stand, started in 2019 and is expected to be completed in 2020. The second part, a new stand behind one of the goals, will commence once the main stand is completed. This will raise capacity to 30,000 seats.

How to get to Stade Saint-Symphorien
