History and description

Stadion Essen was built in order to replace Essen's old Georg-Melches-Stadion, which had fallen into disrepair by the late 2000s. . Construction of the new stadium, next to the old one, started in 2011 and three out of four stands were completed within one year. The stadium, named Stadion Essen, opened on August 12th 2012 with a double header of R-W Essen's U19 team and SGS Essen's women?s team.

The opening of the new stadium led to the demolition of the old Georg-Melches-Stadion next door. This created space for the construction of the fourth stand, which was completed one year later in 2013.
