History and description

The stadium had a seating capacity of 34,000 people at the time. The venue hosted the European Football Championship in 1974 and the qualification matches for the 1990 World Cup. In 1992, it was chosen to host the UEFA Cup final match between Barcelona and Milan. The stadium that is now known as Stadion Slaski was originally built in 1937 with a running track and capacity for around 90,000 spectators. In 1963, when Gornik and Austria Vienna played a European match, the stadium was said to have recorded an attendance of 120,000. The east stand tower was one of the stadium's unique features.

The stadium was never used as a permanent home for a team, but it has been often used by the Poland national team and for a long time considered to be the national stadium. It furthermore hosted the odd Cup Final and important European matches of local teams, in particular Gornik Zabrze, but also Ruch Chorzow, GKS Katowice, and Polonia Bytom.

By the 2000s, the stadium had incurred significant wear and tear. Plans were made for an extensive refurbishment, including the construction of a roof over the stands. Furthermore, the western main stand was to be partly rebuilt, including the addition of VIP facilities.

Construction work on this building started in 2009 but progress was slow and further delayed when part of the roof structure collapsed. In the end, it took 8 years to complete the works.

Whereas a new national stadium has been built in Warsaw, Stadion Slaski still hosts occasional matches of the national team and other sports and music events.
