History and description

In the 1990s, the stadium underwent major renovations and was renamed to honor former club president Fritz Walter. The stadium of friendship opened in early 1930. It was initially called the municipal stadium, and received its present name in 1950. In the 1990s, the stadium underwent major renovations and was renamed in honor of former club president Fritz Walter. The stadium, which used to be home to Energie Cottbus in the late 1970s, became their new home in 2017. At that time, it was oval-shaped, had one covered main stand, and open terraces on all other sides. It could hold around 15,000 spectators.

Several renovations were performed on the terraces in 1983 and a new main stand opened five years later.

The stadium of friendship underwent several minor refurbishments in the 1990s, but more substantial improvements were needed when the club first promoted to the 2. Bundesliga and later to the Bundesliga.

In 2004, a new stand was built east of the original one. In 2007 and 2008, two new stands were built at either end of the original stand.

The stadium became the property of Energie Cottbus in 2011, for a sum of almost $2 million.

How to get to Stadion der Freundschaft

The Stadium of Friendship is located just south-east of Cottbus city centre and just east of the main railway station. The stadium is about a 15-minute walk downhill from the main railway station. The walk from Cottbus' city centre is only a few minutes more.

There are frequently direct trains from Berlin Hbf and Ostbahnhof to Cottbus. The journey takes under ninety minutes. There are also direct train from Dresden, though less frequent, that take just under two hours.

If arriving by car from the A15 motorway, exit 4 Cottbus-West and follow the B169 toward the city. Signs will guide you to the stadium from there.
