History and description

The Stadium of Light was built in the mid 1990s as a replacement for Sunderland's old Roker Park, which was inadequate for further expansion and modernisation. The Stadium of Light was built at a nearby site and initially had a capacity of 42,000 seats.

The 31st of July was the opening day of the stadium, and there was a friendly match between Sunderland and Ajax.

In 2002, the Stadium of Light was expanded to 49,000 seats. The stadium's design allows for further expansions to a maximum capacity of 66,000 seats, though no plans for such expansion exist at the moment.

How to get to the Stadium of Light

The Stadium of Light stands on the north bank of the River Wear. Sunderland is located on the south bank and it is a 15-minute walk away. Sunderland's main railway station is also located on the south bank. After the match, northbound (Newcastle) supporters are required to board at Stadium of Light station, whereas southbound supporters need to board at St. Peters.

Furthermore, there are buses that stop near the stadium, including buses 2, 3, 4, 12, 13, 15 and 16.

Address: Stadium of Light, Sunderland, SR5 1SU

Eat, drink, and sleep near the Stadium of Light

The Stadium of Light is located in a typical British urban area and while there are a few places around to get a drink or something to eat, e.g. at North Bridge St., you can just as well do this in Sunderland's city center, which is only a short walk away. There are not many hotels in Sunderland, and none in the vicinity of the stadium. One potential hotel to consider is Mowbray Guest House. The hotel is located in the city center, and it is theoretically possible to walk there. However, it is also close to the metro system.

Alternatively, you can also pick one of the hotels on the North Sea coast, which are about a 20-30 minute walk to the stadium. The Best Western Tavistock Roker Hotel and Roker Lodge are two options. The Balmoral & Terrace Guest Houses gets excellent reviews, but requires at least a three-night stay.

Sunderland Tickets

Tickets for Sunderland games can be purchased online, by phone, or at the Stadium of Light ticket office. Tickets are available at the ticket office before the match. Sunderland typically only sell out the Tyne-Wear derby and possibly one or two other high-profile matches per season.

Tickets for category B matches, in between the two, range from £27.00 for a seat behind the goal to £32.00 for a central seat at one of the long sides. Tickets fall into three price categories: C tickets are the cheapest at £25.00 per ticket and go up to £30.00 for seats in the corners or at one of the long sides; A tickets are more expensive, ranging from £32.00 to £40.00 per ticket; and B tickets are in-between with prices ranging from £27.00 for a seat behind the goal to £32.00 for a central seat at one of the long sides

You can find a stadium plan here. For more information, please call the ticket office at +44 (0) 871 911 1973.

Stadium of Light tours

The Sunderland Football Club offer guided stadium tours around the stadium that include a visit to the players' lounge, dressing room, players' tunnel and dugouts. The tours last just over 60 minutes. The tours run roughly once a month and more often during the summer holidays. For exact dates, availability, and bookings, check the Sunderland website or call the Tours Hotline +44 (0) 191 551 5055.

The tour costs £10.00.

We made a weekend of it by going to Sunderland's beautiful stadium. It's only 30 minutes away from the city center, and the fans are friendly. Our bets always won, and we even had a class meal at a pub. Finally, we had a party for a family day out.

The stadium and atmosphere are great. My Dad enjoyed his last visit before he died, and he continues to support the team.

However, the seats need to be replaced (they're faded) and the away fans are housed in the top tier, which is inconvenient.

The stadium is really great and has an excellent atmosphere. The family zone is great, and the price range is excellent depending on what you want. However, the seats need to be replaced (they're faded) and the away fans are housed in the top tier, which is out of the way.

The supporters never stopped cheering and singing even when the Newcastle equalised. I would rate it a 5.25 out of 10.

After we won 2-1 against Newcastle, the supporters never stopped cheering and singing. I would rate it 5 out of 10.
