History and description

The Szusza Ferenc Stadion was built in 1922 after Ujpest had been forced to find a new home when their rent was terminated. The newly built stadium, then called Megyeri Úti Stadion, had a seating capacity of about 20,000 people. It officially opened on 17 September 1922 with a match between Ujpest and FTC (2-1). The stadium was further expanded in the early 1930s.

During World War 2, wood from the stadium was taken by looters and it subsequently became further damaged when it was flooded in 1945.

The Megyeri Uti Stadion was rebuilt soon after the original stadium was destroyed, and it was able to hold a larger crowd thanks to this. Several internationals were played at the ground before Ferenc Púskas Stadion opened in 1953. Ujpest started playing their high-profile matches at the bigger stadium.

A few modest improvements were made over the next few decades, but the stadium gradually fell into disrepair and its capacity was reduced due to safety concerns.

Ujpest started an extensive redevelopment program in 1999, and between 1999 and 2001 the stadium got almost completely rebuilt into a modern all-seater.

After the renovations were completed, the stadium was renamed in honor of Szusza Ferenc, a great player and coach who led Hungary to victory at the 1936 Olympic Games.

How to get to Szusza Ferenc Stadion

The Szusza Ferenc Stadion is located in the Ujpest area in the north of Budapest. It is just a few hundred metres from the banks of the river Danube and lies about 8 kilometres north of Budapest's city centre. The stadium is located approximately 20 minutes away from the Újpest-Városkapu metro station, which is on line 3.
