veoh.com
While Twitch continues to dominate the live streaming market, YouTube continues to dominate the overall video streaming platform. Veoh is a tiny video streaming service that is only relevant due to its short clips and free movies.
What is Veoh?
Additionally, Veoh offers a premium service that allows users to see the videos with subtitles and with an ad-free experience.
Veoh is an online streaming service where users can upload short videos, movies, and TV shows. It is not a new app or an idea that we haven't heard yet. Random clips uploaded by the users isn't a fresh concept. However, there's no denying that there are tons of videos on this platform. You can upload videos in a wide range of platforms with no restrictions on the resolution, length or file size. This platform organizes the content based upon the duration, and you get to watch the content bifurcated across various categories. Additionally, Veoh offers a premium service that allows users to see the videos with subtitles and with an ad-free experience.
Why should you stream on Veoh?
There are many good reasons to stream on Veoh rather than to stream on other platforms. In this review, I will share some good and bad points about Veoh streaming.
Content Library
There's no questioning that YouTube and Twitch dominate the streaming world, but Veoh might just have a few tricks up its sleeve. For one, Veoh hosts over a million videos compared to YouTube's billion, while also boasting its own music, movies, channels, and unique content. Plus, with 13 subcategories to choose from (including Action-, Comedy-, Horror-, Adventure-, Drama-, Family-, Sci-Fi-, Fantasy-, Cartoon-, Crime- and Romance- themed options), there's sure to be something for everyone on Veoh.
Filter Option
Veoh allows its users to filter content based on their preference. This includes filtering films by length, language, popularity, alphabet, date of upload, and even subtitle. Most of the videos on Veoh are medium-form content between 3-45 minutes in length. If you want to watch a video longer than an hour, you will need to download it. However, one downside to Veoh is that it is not specifically designed for the English-speaking audience.
Language Preference
This platform offers content in various languages, but does not have many English-language videos. As of the time of this review, there were only 330 English videos on the platform. This means that you would need to be very fluent in English to enjoy this platform.
Download option
Veoh allows users to download videos for offline viewing on their devices. To download a video, users need to install the VeohTV desktop app. Videos that are over 45 minutes long can't be streamed, and thus downloading is the only option available. Apart from downloading, users can also upload videos up to 100 MB in size using a URL.
Why shouldn?t you stream on Veoh?
Given that there is not much content for English or Spanish audiences streaming on this platform, it doesn't make much sense. You would hope for subtitles, which are present in several videos, but not all. Thus, I don't know how helpful it is. As for browsing and navigating around the website, you can choose between English, Japanese, German, Mexican, and Spanish for language preference. (which doesn't make any sense given the content is predominantly in Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or Arabic language)
Video Quality
Unlike other streaming services Veoh does offer toggle options for quality. You can choose between Standard Definition quality or lower, or High Quality stream which will improve the overall quality. I like that you can enlarge the video size and view it on a medium screen mode where the player doesn't take up the entire screen.
How to access Veoh?
To access Veoh, you can either search for the term on the first page of your search results or use the link button on the left to access the website directly. Make sure to use an active VPN before accessing Veoh to protect your identity and device from hackers.
Design
If we're considering this to be a competitive video streaming platform, it's average at best. The content placement, banners, and native ads are ridiculous. While the layout - header, menus, and navigation options are good, the content itself will make you bounce off the platform immediately. It reminds me of an absurd social media platform called "Like Video."
Header
Finally, the bottom of the website has a footer with contact information, legal information, and social media links.
There are multiple header sections on this website. The primary one has a black background with a logo towards the left. Besides that, you can find the search bar, and towards the right you have sign-up options. Then comes the secondary header with five categories - Videos, Movies, Music, Channels, and Groups. Each of these categories has a drop-down menu. For instance under music you can choose from a wide range of platforms such as Alternative , Classical , Country , Electronic , Folk , Hip-Hop/Rap , Jazz , Latin , Metal , Pop , RnB , Rock . Finally at the bottom of the website there is a footer with contact information legal information and social media links
Hero Section
The hero section is a mixed bag. While the layout and interface look good, the thumbnails look poor because most of them were user-uploaded. The creators didn't put much effort into creating thumbnails because most of them didn't even know about it. There wasn't a feature to add your thumbnails until a few months ago.
Body
The body section of the website is filled with user-uploaded videos. Here, you'll find videos such as "Top 10 Surprisingly R-Rated Comedies?" "Top 10 Animated Movies for Adults?" "Top 10 Gundam Pilots?" etc. There are various sections, such as Pickup, Most Viewed Video, and New, where you can find unique content. In addition to this, there is a third-party ad towards the right of the body section.
Footer
The footer section of the website has all the necessary content such as Terms of Use, Copyright, Privacy Policy, About, and EULA. It also includes icons for Facebook and Twitter along with your language preference options. The background and text are blue which compliments the rest of the theme on the website.
Inner Pages
There's also a search bar that will take you to the exact video you're looking for.
The inner pages of the streaming page are better than I expected. There is a mid-sized stream player with a variety of toggle options such as Play/Pause, runtime, volume adjustment, Portrait/Landscape, Streaming Quality, and Full-Screen. Under the player, you'll find information such as the Title, Uploaded by Category, Date of Upload, File Size, Length, Language, and Tags. Under that is two options - Add to Favorites and Add to Group with a link underneath those options. There's also a search bar that will take you to the exact video you're looking for.
Content
Veoh has over a million videos on its platform, with nearly 7000 of them being full-length movies. Out of these, 300 are in the English language. Veoh doesn't boast the most extensive collection of normal movies, but it does have a massive library of short user-uploaded videos.
There are more than a dozen genres that you can choose from when viewing content on the website. Other than that, you have the sorting feature using which you can sort the content based upon the length, language, subtitle, popularity, and title.
Desktop/Mobile experience
That tells me that the quality is not great. I was also not impressed with the user interface or navigation. Overall, Veoh is an average platform that I would not recommend to anyone.
The Veoh platform is an ordinary one with nothing standout about it - there are no amazing features or impressive design choices, and the quality of the videos is not great either. The user interface and navigation are also not particularly good, which makes using this platform frustrating. Additionally, there are intrusive ads on this platform, which makes it difficult to enjoy videos. I streamed Veoh on my HP15 laptop and experienced a 4-10 seconds buffer before every video - this tells me that the quality of the videos is not great. In conclusion, I do not recommend using Veoh as its unremarkable features and poor quality make it a mediocre choice for anyone looking for a video streaming service.
Suggestions I have for Veoh
Veoh needs to revamp its design. The fact that the developers are resorting to banner ads instead of membership shows how little interest users have in the platform. There are cuts here and there, but nothing significant enough to hook me into this platform.
Conclusion
If you have some free time, you can check out the platform. I don't think it's that great, and sorting is not as cool as it appears. The website isn't very pleasing to browse, navigate, or stream on.
