Description

The stadium was renamed the Neckarstadion in 1970. The stadium could initially hold about 37,000 spectators, most of whom would stand. It counted as one of the most modern stadiums in the country and the city of Frankfurt therefore applied to organise the 1936 Olympics. After intervention from the national government these were moved to Berlin though.

The Waldstadion is also the site of the 1974 World Cup final, which was contested by West Germany and Argentina. The stadium expansion project took place between 1936 and 1938, resulting in a capacity of 54,000. The club used the stadium for occasional high-profile matches during those years, including the 1974 World Cup final, which was contested by West Germany and Argentina.

In 1953, Eintracht played FC Kaiserslautern for the German title. While the stadium could only hold 54,000 people, a total of 68,000 tickets were sold and many thousands of people more obtained illegal entry. Chaos ensued and more than 200 people got hurt.

The city of Frankfurt decided to almost completely rebuild their stadium. The works lasted about 19 months and on the 14th of May 1955, the Waldstadion reopened. It could then hold a total of 87,000 spectators of which 61,000 were standing.

In actuality, only 81,000 people were allowed into the stadium and this record attendance was set on the 23rd of May 1959 when Eintracht played FK Primasens for the German title. After the creation of the Bundesliga in 1963, Eintracht made the Waldstadion its permanent home.

In 1968, the city of Frankfurt applied to become a host city of the 1974 World Cup. As a result, the stadium had to get thoroughly renovated, partly fitted with cover, and standing areas had to get converted into seats in order to meet the minimum requirement of 50% seats. Capacity was therefore reduced to 61,000 places.

The 1974 World Cup opened with Brazil and Yugoslavia playing to a 0-0 draw at the newly built stadium in Mexico. The stadium hosted two more first-round matches, with West Germany beating Poland 1-0. The second group stage saw Brazil play Iran and Poland face Sweden, with Sweden emerging as semifinalists after beating Iran 2-1. The final match of the group stage was Brazil's clash against Poland, which they lost 1-0.

There were very few changes in the years following 1988. In 1988, the Waldstadion was again one of the selected playing venues during the European Championships that were played that year. It hosted two group matches during the tournament.

In order to ensure the safety of fans, the Waldstadion had significantly aged by the late 1990s and its capacity had been reduced to 30,546 seats. The 2006 World Cup provided the perfect incentive for a new stadium to be built, and so in 2007 construction began on a new stadium that would seat 51,146 people.

The last match played at the old stadium was in May 2002 and in the three years following, the stadium gradually deteriorated and was replaced by the new Commerzbank Arena.
