Description

The old Wembley Stadium was the English national stadium for eighty years. It was demolished and replaced with a new stadium with the same name. The stadium was consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury on the 26th of April 1923.

Once the crowd had spilled onto the pitch, the match was in danger of being cancelled until policeman George Scorey and his white horse Billy drove the crowds back onto the terraces. The match ended in Bolton defeating West Ham 2-0.

Wembley was the centerpiece stadium of the 1948 London Olympics and hosted, among others, the athletics tournament.

The stadium was originally built with a glass roof in 1963. In the same year, their first European Cup final was played at the stadium when Milan beat Benfica 2-1.

After three years, the 1966 World Cup saw nine matches played at the stadium, including the semi-final between England and Portugal (2-1) and the final between England and West-Germany (4-2).

Wembley hosted four more European Cup finals in the following decades. The first was between Manchester United and Benfica in 1968 (4-1), the second was between Ajax and Panathinaikos in 1971 (2-0), the third was between Liverpool and Club Brugge in 1978 (1-0), and the fourth was between Barcelona and Sampdoria in 1992 (1-0).

The stadium will host two Cup Winners' Cup finals: the first in 1965 between West Ham and TSV 1860 (2-0) and the second in 1993 between Parma and Antwerp (3-1).

1996 saw the European Championships being hosted at Wembley Stadium with its capacity reduced to just 76,000 due to the stadium's conversion into an all-seater. The most notable matches during the tournament were the semi-final between Germany and England (1-1) and the final between Germany and the Czech Republic (2-1).

The last match played at the stadium was an international between England and Germany, with Dieter Hamann scoring the last goal. Shortly after the stadium got demolished to make way for the new Wembley Stadium, which opened in 2007.

The most distinctive aspects of the stadium were its two white towers and the 39 steps to the Royal Box that the players had to climb after a final to receive their trophy.
