Group E of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

A "group of death", as a particularly difficult constellation is called, Germany was able to avoid at the 2022 World Cup in contrast to the last European Championship. As expected, however, Spain has a strong opponent in World Cup Group E, which will make the race for 1st place difficult for the DFB. With Germany and Spain, two of the last three world champions play in the same group. Japan is also a strong Asian team. With Costa Rica, a team from the playoffs completes the group, which also has to be beaten first.

The two European teams are likely to be regarded everywhere as the favourites for places 1 and 2, but the games of the 2022 World Cup will not be a sure-fire success. Both Germany and Spain have had painful experiences in the past with what happens if you as a favorite do not approach the tasks seriously.

The 2022 World Cup Group E in analysis

The winners of Group E will face the top two teams in Group F in the round of sixteen. It will be difficult for both the Germans and the Spaniards to name a preference. After all, Belgium and vice-world champion Croatia are among the possible opponents.

With Canada and Morocco, there are also two teams in Group F that can cause unpleasant surprises. For all starters in Group E, the motto can therefore only be: They have to win their own games in order to reach the knockout round with as much confidence as possible.

Spain has something to prove

Spain's national team was unbeatable between 2008 and 2012. Subsequently, it went much worse: At the World Championships in 2014 and 2018 as well as at the European Championship in 2016, they were eliminated early for their own circumstances. At the Euro 2021, however, it was enough to participate in the semi-finals. At the 2022 World Cup, the Spaniards want to prove that they are back on their way to the top. The squad available to coach Luis Enrique is still good enough for this and also gives them a place among the 2022 World Cup favorites.

Examples are the names Pedri, Rodri, Marco Llorente or Gavi. Spain has several world-class players in every position. In the second edition of the Nations League, this was also felt by Germany, which went down 0:6.

Germany is on a redemption tour

The 0:6 is an example of what is at stake for Germany in Qatar: reparation. In addition, there are the early exit at the Euro 2021 (round of sixteen) and the disastrous World Cup 2018. Under the new national coach Hansi Flick, the German national team played much stronger again. Similar to Spain, the coach also has the necessary quality at his disposal to be successful.

Joshua Kimmich, Kai Havertz, Thomas Müller, Ilkay Gündogan and Leroy Sané are examples of this. Germany is also world-class in every position.

Japan wants to be an unpleasant opponent

Both Germany and Spain will have to beat Japan's World Cup team to safely survive the group stage. The pressure will be high - and this is exactly what coach Hajime Moriyasu wants to use with his team.

With players like Takehiro Tomiyasu, Daichi Kamada, Japan star Takumi Minamino or Wataru Endo, he does not have absolute world class at his disposal, but the quality is enough to hurt any opponent on a good day. If the other team is under pressure, the chances are likely to be particularly great again.

Costa Rica completes the group

Group E is completed by Costa Rica, who qualified via the intercontinental playoffs in the match against New Zealand. Probably the most famous player in the ranks of Costa Rica is Keylor Navas.

In theory, Costa Rica is noticeably too weak to be a threat to Spain or Germany. And actually, the Japanese should have no problems to assert themselves due to the higher individual quality. But these sentences are often heard and read as an inclined fan before and during the tournaments. On the pitch, however, it suddenly looks completely different. For Costa Rica itself, participating in the World Cup is already a great success.

Our tip for Group E of the 2022 World Cup

Naturally, we can only assume what we know on paper about the teams and the individual players in their clubs. And after that, the matter is crystal clear: Spain and Germany reach the round of sixteen of the 2022 World Cup. The form of the day decides which of the two teams can conquer the first place. Japan has to settle for 3rd place after a strong fighting performance. Team number 4 Costa Rica lands on exactly this rank. We type accordingly.

However, it should only be mentioned that Germany and Spain will meet in the second game of the group stage. After that, one of the two teams could be obliged to win the third game in any case. If this happens, this additional pressure may lead to a completely different outcome.
