The 2022 World Cup teams are under particular pressure on this day. After all, the quarter-finals are something like the fear round of every World Cup. For whoever is eliminated here, the tournament is over.

However, those who progress have at least two games left - after all, in addition to the World Cup semi-finals, there is also the match for 3rd place as the so-called small final and the big World Cup 2022 final.

Quarter-finals not so long an integral part of the World Cup programme

What surprises many younger fans - the quarter-finals in its current form are not so old in the history of the World Cup. It was not introduced until the 1986 tournament in Mexico. Theoretically, there were also corresponding games at the World Championships in 1934 and 1938 - at that time, however, the whole tournament consisted of only four rounds, which were played completely in the knockout system.

At the 1950 World Cup, there were only matches in groups. And at the tournaments from 1954 to 1970 it existed, but was subsequently taken out of the program. Until 1982, the semi-finals followed directly after the group stage. The quarter-finals were therefore not needed. It was reborn in 1986.

Records of World Cup quarter-finals - an overview

Between 1986 and 2018, not a single team managed to qualify for every quarter-final of a World Cup. Up to and including 2014, this was different. Germany was in every round of the last 8. As is well known, however, the World Cup of shame followed in Russia, where after embarrassing performances was already over after the preliminary round.

The highest victory in a football World Cup quarter-final was recorded by Sweden. Against Cuba there was an 8-0 in 1938. Otherwise, only one other quarter-final in history has made it into the category of the highest World Cup victories: the duel between Germany and Argentina at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The DFB team won the game at that time. However, Austria's 7-5 win over Switzerland in the quarter-finals of the 1954 World Cup was the highest-scoring World Cup game ever.

At the 1958 World Cup, Brazil's quarter-finals against Wales featured a man who was to make history in football - and he caught that day. Pele scored for the Selecao. At 17 years and 239 days, he became the youngest World Cup scorer of all time.

Which team was in a World Cup quarter-final most often?

With Germany and Brazil, two teams have qualified eight times since 1986 for a quarter-final at a World Cup. Both teams thus occupy the top position in this question. And not only that: you also have a head start.

3rd place goes to Argentina. However, the team, which has been shaped by legendary players such as Diego Maradona or Lionel Messi, has only qualified for the round of 8 six times. Similar to Germany, this failed in 2018, for example. But even in 2002 Argentina was not in the quarterfinals.

The reigning world champion of the 2018 World Cup France has five quarter-final appearances. The performance of Les Bleus is relatively changeable - after 1986, France did not make it to a quarter-final again until 1998 - and won the title. The next quarter-final was in 2006 - here it was enough for 2nd place in the end.

In 2014, France was again in the quarter-finals - here was against Germany over. And four years later, as is well known, the Blues won the title again. So applies to France: If the participation in the quarter-finals succeeds, then this is almost the guarantee for a successful World Cup - if it is not against the Germans.
