All about the 2022 World Cup round of sixteen

When the round of sixteen of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is due, then for many fans the tournament really begins. After all, the group stage is now over. Now it goes on in the knockout phase. If you lose here, the tournament is over. This tension beats nothing.

The first round of sixteen will take place on 3 December 2022. The last duel of this round will be played on 6 December of the year. It is therefore up to St. Nicholas to determine which two teams will be the last to reach the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals at the first Winter World Cup in history.

Well-known World Cup mode for the round of sixteen

Anyone who is familiar with the mode according to which the World Cup has been held for almost 20 years now does not have to change. As is well known, there are eight World Cup groups in 2022. The two best-placed teams from these qualify for the round of sixteen. Unlike, for example, at the 2021 European Championships, no third-placed teams have the chance to continue the tournament. When the round of sixteen begins, the original 32 World Cup participants in 2022 will have become only 16 teams.

In the knockout phase, group winners play against runners-up. This should enhance the group victory. After all, in theory, the runner-up is slightly worse. Depending on the group and the course of the tournament so far, however, there may well be some juicy duels. There is only one game for each round of sixteen. Whoever wins this has solved the ticket for the next round.

In the event of a draw, the game goes into extra time. It does not matter how it stands. Unlike, for example, in club competitions, "away goals" have no special meaning. If there is still a draw after extra time, the game is decided on penalties. In the event of a case, this also follows the rules that have been known for decades.

Kick-off times at relatively family-friendly times

The World Cup is traditionally an event that brings the family together in front of the TV. Not infrequently, friends with their relatives are still invited. And everyone goes straight together to the public viewing.

At the Football World Cup 2022, this can happen in the rather unusual combination with the Christmas market. It is therefore important that the kick-off times are family-friendly, so that you can easily watch together - after all, the next day is work or school.

For the 2022 World Cup round of sixteen in Qatar, the kick-off times are relatively family-friendly. As you can see from the schedule above, there are two games every day. The first will always kick off at 4 p.m. Central European Time. This should generally not cause any problems. The second game of each day starts at 8 pm Central European Time.

That actually sounds relatively easy like prime time. However, it should be noted that it can be relatively late with extra time and a possible penalty shoot-out - in addition, if the follow-up reporting is to be watched together.

The venues of the 2022 World Cup round of sixteen

The round of sixteen matches will take place in eight different World Cup 2022 stadiums. Therefore, it makes sense to take a look at the venues. The following order of the stadiums is based on that of the games. The first stadium will therefore be the venue for the round of sixteen on 3 December 2022 at 4 pm, the second arena will be the venue for the match on the same day at 8 pm - and so on.

Remarkably, the stadiums are close together due to Qatar's small size. Fans can therefore at least theoretically watch two games in one day.

These nations are in the 2022 World Cup knockout phase

All those teams that occupy 1st or 2nd place in the group after all group matches are firmly in the 2022 World Cup round of sixteen. The participants in the round of 16 will therefore be determined at the latest after the last match of the group stage.

Those national teams in third and fourth place in the groups have been eliminated from the tournament and will not participate in the rest of the tournament. A move into the quarter-finals or even the World Cup semi-finals in 2022 is therefore no longer possible for them.

Review: World Cup 2018 knockout round

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the following match pairings took place in the second round:

The biggest surprise in the second round of the 2018 World Cup was not one of the teams that qualified for the knockout phase, but one that missed the knockout phase. The then reigning world champion Germany could not advance to the round of 16.

In the round of sixteen itself, the home team Russia caused the next sensation by defeating Spain on penalties and sending Furia Roja home. The second nation of the Iberian Peninsula and the European champions of 2016 Portugal also said goodbye to Uruguay in the round of sixteen.

All other games went as expected. The eventual world champion France narrowly prevailed against Argentina with Lionel Messi. Croatia defeated the Danes on penalties, as did England defeated the Colombians. Brazil (against Mexico), Belgium (against Japan) and Sweden (against Switzerland) also advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals.
