All information about the TV broadcast of the 2022 World Cup

Which football fan would have thought a few years ago to watch matches of a football World Cup on television in the middle of the Advent season? At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, this absurd idea is now becoming reality.

Due to the extremely high temperatures that prevail in the desert state of Qatar in summer, FIFA decided for the first time to move a finals into the winter. From 20 November to 18 December 2022, there will now be a public viewing with mulled wine and punch at the Christmas market, where the 2022 World Cup stars can be watched.

If you don't want to shiver in the cold, you can of course also make yourself comfortable in front of the TV. But not all 64 World Cup games are available live on free TV - at least in Germany. Here, 16 World Cup matches without German participation can be seen exclusively on the paid MagentaTV, including eighth and quarter-final matches as well as the match for 3rd place.

In Austria and Switzerland, the public broadcasters have secured the TV rights for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. There, football fans can watch all 64 games on free TV, whereby in Austria 25 games can be seen on the private channel ServusTV due to a cooperation with ORF. Pay-TV services such as DAZN, SKY or MagentaTV were left empty-handed in the allocation of rights in Austria and Switzerland.

TV schedule of the 2022 World Cup group stage

All times according to German time (= Central European Time CET)

Football fans can look forward to football around the clock at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. On most match days of the preliminary round phase, there are four different kick-off times per day: 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. German time. Of course, the 2022 World Cup opening match on 20 November, including the grand opening ceremony, will also be broadcast on TV.

The matches on the third and last matchday of the group stage will be played in parallel as usual and kicked off either at 16:00 or 20:00 German time.

TV broadcast of the 2022 World Cup final

All times according to German time (= Central European Time CET)

In the World Cup knockout phase 2022, as on the last group match day, the game will be played at either 16:00 or 20:00 German time. The two semi-final matches will each be played at 20:00, the big World Cup final will finally take place on the fourth Sunday of Advent, 18 December 2022, at 16:00 German time in Lusail City (see the entire World Cup schedule here).

These TV channels broadcast the 2022 World Cup in Germany

In Germany, a lot is changing compared to past World Cups. Although the public broadcasters ARD (Das Erste) and ZDF secured the rights to the TV broadcast of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in 2014, not all 64 games will be shown live on free-to-air television.

Due to a deal with Deutsche Telekom, a total of 16 games, including matches in the 2022 World Cup, the round of sixteen and quarter-finals as well as the match for 3rd place, will be broadcast exclusively on the pay-TV channel MagentaTV. However, all games of the German national team are exempt from this, which will continue to run on free TV (i.e. either on ZDF or ARD).

The rights package, which was negotiated between SportA, the joint sports rights agency of ARD and ZDF, and the world football association FIFA, also includes broadcasting rights via live stream. This can then be accessed live and free of charge via the ARD/ZDF media library.

As with the EURO 2021, world champion Bastian Schweinsteiger will accompany the live broadcasts of ARD as a TV expert at the 2022 World Cup. His world champion colleague Per Mertesacker is likely to be in action for ZDF.

In Austria, ORF and ServusTV show the World Cup matches

The public broadcaster ORF already secured the broadcasting rights for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in 2012 and thus remains the number 1 World Cup broadcaster in Austria. However, not all 64 World Cup matches will be broadcast on ORF 1. Since ORF 1 is cooperating with ServusTV for the final round, 25 of them will be shown on Didi Mateschitz's TV station. This includes 19 matches from the group stage, two round of sixteen and two quarter-final matches, a semi-final and the match for 3rd place.

In addition, Österreichische Rundfunk and ServusTV hold the live rights to the radio broadcasts, live streaming and video-on-demand content. Livestreams and highlights of the World Cup in Qatar can therefore be accessed free of charge in the media library.

The team of moderators and experts will once again show familiar faces on ORF. Above all, the duo around presenter Rainer Pariasek and TV expert and football legend Herbert Prohaska already has something like cult status in Austria and will certainly provide many amusing TV moments at the 2022 World Cup.

TV broadcast of the 2022 World Cup on Swiss television

In Switzerland, too, everything remains the same. The public media group SRG SSR has secured the TV rights to the 2022 World Cup. The channels and platforms of SRF, RTS, RSI and RTR will cover all 64 World Cup matches on TV, radio and multimedia exclusively, live and freely accessible within Switzerland. On television, the games will probably be broadcast on SRF 2, live streams are available in the Play SRF media library.

If you want to watch a World Cup 2022 match via livestream on the net, make sure that all providers have set up a so-called geoblocking.

This means that the live streams of the German channels ARD and ZDF can only be accessed in Germany, while the ORF streams are only available in Austria and SRF live streams only work in Switzerland. So-called VPN services could help you bypass these blocks.
