History and description

The Stadion Woudestein, since 2017 called Van Donge & De Roo Stadion, has been the home of Excelsior since their foundation in 1902. However, Excelsior have had to move around between different stadiums in the early 20th century. Woudestein became the permanent home of Excelsior in 1939, after it underwent an extensive renovation to be used as a club. However, in the following 5 years, Excelsior was unable to use the ground because anti-aircraft guns were stationed there during World War 2.

The stadium underwent renovations in 1958 and 1973, with the latter resulting in a substantially larger venue with a maximum capacity of about 27,000 people.

In the 1990s, it was becoming outdated and the club was looking into sharing a ground with Sparta Rotterdam. However, these plans failed and instead the club decided to renovate Woudestein.

Two new stands were built, including a new main stand with business seats. As a result of this, the stadium's capacity is now 3,500. The stadium officially reopened on 31 July 2000 with a friendly match against Feyenoord.

In 2010, the club's stand was named after Robin van Persie, who had been a youth academy player at the club. At the same time, the club switched to an artificial pitch.

In 2016, the club decided to expand the stadium by filling two out of four corners and upgrading the hospitality facilities. This raised seating capacity to 4,400.

In 2017, the stadium was renamed Van Donge & De Roo Stadium after a 10-year naming rights sponsorship deal.
